Dr. Julie Miller

Specialist Endocrine Surgeon
Minimal Access Thyroid, Parathyroid, and Adrenal Surgery

Dr. Miller is a specialist surgeon with specific expertise in endocrine surgery. Originally from the United States, she became a fully qualified surgeon in New York City before moving to Australia in 2001. She is a consultant surgeon at Royal Melbourne Hospital and Melbourne Private Hospital, and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery of the University of Melbourne.

She is head of the endocrine tumour group of the Melbourne Comprehensive Cancer Centre, and directs the Thyroid Cancer Multidisciplinary Care Conference. She has a special interest and expertise in minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, as well as thyroid cancer, and adrenal surgery.

In May 2011 Dr. Miller was the first surgeon in Victoria to perform a PRA (posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy) This approach to the adrenal gland is relatively painless, so benefits the patient in terms of faster recovery. Most patients have no need for prescription pain tablets. The procedure was covered on ABC radio and in the Herald Sun newspaper.

Dr.Miller is a sought after speaker and has given many invited lectures nationally and internationally on her areas of expertise.

Endocrine Surgery:

Parathyroid: Dr. Miller provides consultation and treatment for patients with hyperparathyroidism and will discuss at length whether surgery is appropriate and why. She has cured hundreds of patients of high blood calcium so they feel better, have more energy, improved mood, and recovery of bone strength. Patients include many doctors and nurses, and patients who have travelled from interstate and abroad. She performs her own parathyroid ultrasound localization.

Thyroid: Dr. Miller is an expert in thyroid surgery for benign conditions and cancer. Dr. Miller leads the Thyroid Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, which won Royal Melbourne Hospital's BEST of HEALTH Award for 2010.
